About UGC-Academic Staff College
The UGC-ASC, Bangalore University, Bangalore was established on 11th August 2000 and is located in the Old Physics Block of Central College Campus. It is organizing Orientation programmes and Refresher Courses on thrust areas for in service teachers and also for newly appointed teaching faculty on a regular basis. Besides, the ASC is conducting Principals Workshop to update their Administrative Skills as per UGC guide lines.

The ASC has conducted 38 Orientation Programmes and 85 Refresher courses and 3 Principal Workshops in various faculties of Arts, Science and Commerce. So far a total of 4627 teacher participants and 125 Principals have attended the said courses.
Objectives of the UGC-ASC:
  • Understand the significance of education in general, and higher education in particular, in the global and Indian contexts.
  • Understand the linkages between education and economic and socio-economic and cultural development with particular reference to Indian policy where democracy, secularism and social equity are the basic tenants of society.
  • Acquire and improve basic skills of teaching at the College/University levels to achieve the goals of Higher Education.
  • Keep abreast of the latest developments in their specific subjects.
  • Understand the organization and Management of College/University and to pursue the role of teachers in the total system.
  • Utilize opportunity for development of personality, initiative and creativity.
  • Promote computer literacy as well as Internet Knowledge.
Programmes/ Courses offered
  • Orienatation Programmes for newly appointed lectures (28 days)
  • Refresher Courses for inservice teachers (Subjectwise, Interdisciplinary and Multidisciplinary 21 days)
  • Workshop for College Principals/Administrators ( 3 days)
  • Other short term courses as per the UGC guide lines.
Eligibility
Orientation Programme (OP): Newly appointed teachers up to six years of continuous service and all those teachers who require OP for getting higher grades allowed.

Refresher courses (RC):
Participation in OP is prerequisite for admission to Refresher Courses. Thereafter with a gap of one year they can opt for RC. Also there should be minimum gap of one year between two RCs.

Registration fees:
Each participant shall pay admission fee (Nonrefundable) of RS. 500/-.

Selection and enrolment:
Teachers interested in attending OP/RC are required apply for admission to the Director UGC-ASC in the prescribed proforma and forward the same through their respective Head of the Institution, and the selection will be made in accordance with the UGC guide lines.
Accommodation
No accommodation is available to the participants in the Central C9ollege Campus of Bangalore University. However, teachers can get accommodation in few Government guest houses located around the Central College Campus and also at the Bangalore University guest house located at Jnanbharathi Campus on request.
Evaluation of Participants
At the last week of Programme experts preferably externals will assess the participants for 100 marks on the basis of Multiple Choice Objective Test (30), Seminar/Participant Presentation (15), Project/Survey/others (20), Microteaching, Participation (10), Holistic Response (punctuality, regularity, initiative, conductive, responsiveness etc. (25). The Grades will be A (75% and above), B (60% to less than 75%) C (50% to less than 60%) D (below 50%). Those teacher participants get Grade D are required to repeat the Programme after gap of one year without financial commitments to UGC ASC. The grade will be indicated on the course certificate.
Financial Assistance:
The local participants will be paid Rs 100/- per working day for providing hospitality. However the outstation teacher participants will be paid AC-III railway (all trains) or AC deluxe bus fair on production of tickets. To cover the cost of boarding/lodging the ASC will pay Rs. 250/- per day as per the UGC guide lines.
